What Is Depression?

Major Depressive Disorder—commonly referred to as depression—is a serious and treatable mental health condition characterized by prolonged feelings of sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness. Unlike occasional sadness, depression affects your ability to function, concentrate, and connect with others. It often impacts relationships, work or school performance, and physical well-being.

Depression can last for weeks, months, or even years, and it may occur alongside other mental health concerns such as anxiety, ADHD, trauma, or substance use. But with the right support, recovery is possible.

How we treat depression at Ubuntu Psychological Services

Ubuntu Psychological Services provides a holistic and personalized approach to treating depression. Your journey begins with a thorough evaluation to understand your unique symptoms, challenges, and goals. We then design a care plan that supports both emotional healing and overall well-being.

Your depression treatment may include:

  • Individual Therapy - Evidence-based approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), EMDR, and trauma-informed care help identify thought patterns and build emotional regulation.

  • Mindfulness & Stress Reduction – Techniques to calm the nervous system, build selfawareness, and reduce emotional overwhelm.
  • Lifestyle Support – Guidance on sleep, exercise, and nutrition to help restore balance and energy.
  • Culturally Responsive Care – Therapists who understand how cultural identity, intergenerational trauma, and systemic oppression may impact your mental health.

Depression also affects children and adolescents, though it may show up as
