Feeling down or discouraged occasionally is part of the human experience—but when those feelings become persistent, overwhelming, or start to interfere with your daily life, you may be dealing with depression. At Ubuntu Psychological Services, we understand how heavy depression can feel—and we’re here to support your healing journey with warmth, compassion, and evidence-based care.

What Is Depression?
Major Depressive Disorder—commonly referred to as depression—is a serious and treatable mental health condition characterized by prolonged feelings of sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness. Unlike occasional sadness, depression affects your ability to function, concentrate, and connect with others. It often impacts relationships, work or school performance, and physical well-being.
Depression can last for weeks, months, or even years, and it may occur alongside other mental health concerns such as anxiety, ADHD, trauma, or substance use. But with the right support, recovery is possible.
Common symptoms of Depression
Depression can manifest differently for each person, but common symptoms include:
- Persistent sadness or low mood
- Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed
- Feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness, or guilt
- Irritability or emotional numbness
- Fatigue or low energy
- Changes in appetite or weight
- Difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much
- Trouble concentrating or making decisions
- Thoughts of death or suicide
What causes depression?
Depression is complex and can result from a combination of biological, psychological, and environmental factors, including
- Brain chemistry and neurotransmitter imbalances
- Genetic predisposition or family history
- Hormonal changes (e.g., postpartum, thyroid issues)
- Chronic illness or pain conditions
- History of trauma, abuse, or neglect
- Financial strain, grief, or life transitions
- Social isolation or systemic stressors
